The GWO Service Lift User (SLU) training aims to prepare technicians to fully safely and independently operate service lifts inside turbines. The course teaches rigorous procedures for equipment inspection before use, principles of safe loading, and, most importantly, emergency procedures necessary to evacuate the cabin in the event of its sudden failure at a great height.

Course program

The program comprehensively covers operational and rescue issues:

• Regulations and documentation – legal aspects of operating vertical transport equipment. Learning to read and apply the lift manufacturer’s operating instructions.

• Design and types of lifts – discussion of the main components of wire-guided and rack-and-pinion lifts. Operating principles of catching mechanisms and safety brakes.

• Pre-use inspection – rigorous checklists. Checking limit switches, emergency buttons, the condition of ropes, and cabin doors before starting a ride.

• Safe operation – rules of loading, observing Safe Working Load (SWL) limits, correct distribution of personnel and equipment, and communication during the ride.

• Emergency procedures – responding to a jammed lift, fire, or power loss. Procedures for manual, emergency lowering of the cabin and principles of evacuating personnel from the lift directly onto the tower ladder.

What will you learn?

By participating in this training, you will acquire competencies that allow you to:

• Detect potential faults of the service lift even before entering the cabin, preventing dangerous accidents during the ride.

• Smoothly and safely operate the lift control panel in accordance with the rigorous safety guidelines of the wind turbine.

• Act calmly and methodically in the event of a sudden lift failure – e.g., independently, manually bringing a jammed cabin down to the nearest working platform.

• Safely evacuate from the cabin using fall protection equipment in a situation where the lift cannot be lowered.

What does the training look like?

The training is characterized by a very practical approach to safety:

• Theory and inspection: discussion of equipment design supported by an analysis of real emergency events on wind farms. Learning how to fill out inspection documentation.

• Simulation workshops: classes are conducted using a realistic VR simulator. Participants perform inspection cycles, a test ride, and then, under the supervision of an instructor, practice the procedures of emergency, manual lowering and evacuating the cabin.

Confirmation of course completion

Passing the module is based on continuous assessment. GWO instructors closely verify your knowledge of safety procedures and the correctness of conducting inspections and emergency maneuvers. Upon successful completion of the course, you receive the GWO Service Lift User certificate. The qualifications are immediately registered in the global WINDA database, certifying your right to operate service lifts on wind farms worldwide.

Where does the training take place, and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided by the secretariat staff upon confirmation of the course.
