Holding a generic ECDIS certificate is insufficient for a navigating officer to legally and safely take over a watch on a ship. In accordance with international requirements, officers must undergo documented training on the specific software model (Type-Specific Training) they will be working on.

The ECDIS FURUNO course is a practical training that prepares navigators to work with one of the most popular and commonly encountered electronic chart systems in the commercial fleet worldwide (particularly popular on bulk carriers and tankers, including models from the FMD-3100, FMD-3200, and FMD-3300 series). Furuno systems are characterized by advanced, specific interface logic. This training was created so that officers wishing to supplement their competencies can instinctively and efficiently use this software in everyday navigation.

• A valid identity document (ID card / passport / mObywatel app)
• Operational use of ECDIS certificate (Generic ECDIS certificate)

Course program:

The training is purely operational in nature and focuses on the specifics of the Furuno menu and software:

• Interface and operation – Furuno device menu logic, view management, color palettes, and configuration of information panels for the Officer of the Watch (OOW).
• Chart management – proper installation of licenses, loading new ENC chart cells, and installing weekly updates.
• Voyage planning – graphical and tabular route creation, defining safety corridors, configuration of planning alarms, and working with User Charts (adding notes, areas, and navigational lines).
• Voyage monitoring – tracking the ship’s position, setting safety contours, correctly overlaying the radar image and ARPA/AIS targets on the chart.
• Logbook and alarm management – interpretation of alerts generated by the Furuno system, differences between alarms and warnings, access to the voyage log, and solving typical problems with the loss of sensor signals.

• Smoothly, stress-free, and safely operate the Furuno ECDIS system in daily work, eliminating the time wasted searching for basic functions in the menu.
• Independently carry out flawless updates of the electronic chart database, which is one of the most frequently verified elements during Port State Control inspections.
• Quickly configure the chart view according to your own preferences and the current situation at sea (e.g., in conditions of restricted visibility).

What does the training look like?

The training is highly practical and carried out in a standardized simulation environment. Participants perform exercises at stations equipped with training software reflecting the Furuno system interface.

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
