Course duration: 0.5 days

The Boat Transfer course is an intensive and highly practical training aimed at technicians, engineers, and personnel working in the offshore wind sector and on other offshore installations. The main goal of the training is to prepare participants for the safe and efficient transfer between transport vessels (Crew Transfer Vessels – CTV) and offshore wind turbines or other stationary structures. Transferring from a heaving boat to a wind turbine ladder is one of the most common, yet riskiest moments in daily offshore work. This training raises awareness of the hazards associated with sea dynamics and teaches appropriate, safe habits that drastically minimize the risk of accidents.

Course program

The training covers the necessary knowledge and practice regarding safe transfers at sea:

• Introduction to transfer procedures – rules of conduct on board the transport vessel before, during, and after the transfer.

• Risk management – recognizing hazards related to wave motion, sea currents, vessel impact against the structure, and variable weather conditions.

• Personal protective equipment – the correct selection, checking, and use of offshore workwear, survival suits, and lifejackets/buoyancy aids.

• Safe transfer techniques – exercises in safely crossing (the so-called “step-over”) from the bow of the vessel to the ladder of the target structure, maintaining proper posture and belaying.

• Emergency response – basic procedures to follow in the event of falling into the water or an incident during the transfer.

What will you learn?

By participating in this half-day course, you will gain specific skills allowing you to:

• Independently and correctly prepare personal protective equipment before going out onto the open deck.

• Properly interpret the commands and signals given by the vessel’s crew (the captain and deckhands) coordinating the transfer.

• Assess your own capabilities in relation to the vessel’s current behavior in the waves (heave, pitch, roll).

• Execute a technically correct step-over from the CTV to the wind turbine ladder, considering the three points of contact rule.

• Control stress and act adequately in the event of unforeseen situations at sea.

What does the training look like?

The course lasts 4 hours and is oriented towards acquiring physical skills in simulated conditions.

• Short theoretical part – an introduction to safety rules, equipment discussion, and risk analysis during transfers, conducted by an experienced instructor.

• Practical training – this is the main core of the course. Participants perform simulated transfers in a dedicated infrastructure. These practical experiences allow for the building of muscle memory and familiarization with techniques that will become an everyday occurrence when working on wind farms.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

Theoretical training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Practical training is organized in Gdynia at the Dalmor quay – transport is provided for the trainee by the Maritime School.

Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
