The Passenger safety, cargo safety and hull integrity training for ro-ro passenger ships is intended for crew members responsible for cargo operations, safety, and monitoring hull integrity on such vessels. During the training, you will learn how to properly secure and load transport units, perform necessary stability calculations, and strictly control hull closures and the atmosphere on cargo decks.

Course program:

• Application of shipboard procedures – covers the principles of loading and unloading vehicles, rail cars, and other transport units, operating ramps and hoistable decks, as well as the safe embarkation of disabled passengers and those requiring assistance. Exercises in this module consolidate the practical application of these procedures.

• Carriage and securing of dangerous goods – applying additional protection and procedures required on ro-ro ships for dangerous goods. The module focuses on the provisions of the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code) and the use of securing equipment taking into account their limitations. The module is conducted in the form of lectures and exercises.

• Calculation of stability, trim, and stress – the scope includes using stability information, calculating deck load capacity factors, and analyzing the impact of ballast and fuel transfer on the ship’s behavior. Half of the time in this module is devoted to intensive exercises using stability calculators and computer software.

• Opening, closing, and securing hull openings – procedures for operating bow, stern, and side doors, ramp systems, and procedures related to testing the ship’s watertight integrity. The module is delivered as theory combined with exercises.

• Ro-ro deck atmosphere – the scope covers the principles of ventilating cargo spaces during port stays, voyages, and emergency situations, as well as the use of portable equipment for atmosphere monitoring. Knowledge in this area is also practiced during practical classes.

What will you learn on the course?

What does the training look like?

The teaching method is based on model course guidelines and combines imparting knowledge of regulations with simulated calculation and procedural tasks. The equipment used during exercises includes stability calculators, computer software, and portable atmosphere monitoring devices.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
