The Dynamic Positioning (DP) Maintenance Training Course is a specialized technical course dedicated to engineers, engineer officers, and electro-technical officers (ETOs) who are responsible for the proper functioning, maintenance, and diagnostics of Dynamic Positioning systems on ships and platforms. Maintaining the ship in the desired position is a critical task for the safety of many offshore operations, and the technical efficiency of the entire system depends on the knowledge and skills of the engine department personnel.
This training allows for an understanding not only of the operating principles of the control system itself but also of the interconnections between individual subsystems: power supply, propulsion (thrusters), position reference systems (PRS), and sensors. The course focuses on the hardware construction of the system, its architecture (including redundancy), preventive maintenance, and the quick and effective localization and troubleshooting of faults.

Accreditations: The course is conducted in accordance with the Nautical Institute program outlined in “The Nautical Institute Certification and Accreditation Standard”.
Course program: The training program covers comprehensive technical knowledge and is organized around the following topics:

DP system architecture and components – the construction and operating principles of DP control systems (computers, consoles, communication networks, input/output systems).

Power supply and distribution – Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, Power Management Systems (PMS), and power distribution in DP classes (DP Class 1, 2, 3).

Thrusters – thruster control systems, interfaces between the DP system and the ship’s propulsion systems.

Position reference systems and sensors – construction, operating principles, and maintenance of measurement systems (e.g., DGPS, laser, microwave, acoustic HPR/HiPAP, taut wire) as well as Motion Reference Units (MRU) and gyrocompasses.

Redundancy and safety – analysis of FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) documentation, Annual DP Trials, and understanding the concept of DP equipment classes.
What will you learn?
By participating in the course, participants will acquire the competencies necessary to independently support DP operations from a technical perspective. You will learn to, among other things:

Identify the individual hardware components of the DP control system and understand their interconnections within the network.

Detect, diagnose, and troubleshoot hardware faults based on alarms, system messages, and technical documentation.

Perform routine maintenance activities and component tests to prevent failures.
-
Analyze and understand key shipboard documents, such as FMEA, Annual DP Trials reports, and service manuals.

Effectively communicate with DP Operators (DPO) on the bridge regarding the technical condition of the system and permissible operational limits (in accordance with ASOG documentation).
What does the training look like?
The training is divided into 3 main parts:

Part 1 – On-site training (theoretical and practical) – lasts 4 days at the training center. It focuses on DP theory, equipment operating principles, familiarization with all system components, and the types and purpose of documentation. It includes lectures and practical exercises during which students analyze systems ensuring safety and redundancy. This part concludes with a practical exam and an online exam.

Part 2 – Sea service (shipboard practice) – after completing the on-site course, the student completes practice on a ship equipped with a DP system (of an appropriate class). It is required to spend 26 days at sea, of which a minimum of 7 days must include direct work on the DP system (minimum 2 operational hours per day).

Part 3 – Obtaining the Statement of Suitability – upon successful completion of the sea service, the final stage is the issuance of a “Statement of Suitability”, which is signed by the Master and the Chief Engineer.
Where does the training take place and is there parking?
The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
