Course duration: 5 days

Requirements:

  • A valid passport

  • A Seaman’s Book

  • The minimum requirement for participation is holding a full DPO certificate issued by The Nautical Institute. The original certificate must be presented at the training center on the first day of classes.

  • The course can be completed up to 6 months before the certificate revalidation (renewal) date set by the NI.

  • Course validity: the certificate of course completion is valid for 12 months – during this time, the DPO must submit a revalidation application to the NI.

  • DP sea time requirements (first time): if the participant is taking the course for the first time, there are no minimum DP sea time requirements.

  • DP sea time requirements (second and subsequent times): in the case of a second (or subsequent) certificate renewal via the course, a minimum of 28 days of DP sea time is required to extend validity. These days can be accumulated before or after completing the refresher course.

  • Returning to the course track after accumulating sea time: if a participant has previously renewed their certificate by accumulating a full 150 days of sea time, they can use the refresher course again for their next revalidation without the need to show additional sea time.

Certificate validity:

  • 1 year

Revalidation rules:

  • First revalidation: course with 0 sea-time days — allowed.

  • Second revalidation: course plus at least 28 DP sea-time days — required.

  • Third revalidation: course plus at least 28 days again, unless the person has completed 150 days during an intervening certification period.

  • If the person revalidates with 150 days, they can use the course with zero sea time again at a future revalidation.

“The Nautical Institute Certification and Accreditation Standard”

Course program

The training covers the strict guidelines of the NI syllabus regarding knowledge revalidation and consists of the following thematic blocks:

  • Industry regulation updates – a review of the latest regulations, standards, and guidelines issued by the IMO, IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association), and MTS (Marine Technology Society).

  • Technological development of DP systems – updates in hardware, software, and the latest position reference systems (PRS) and sensors.

  • Incident analysis – detailed discussion of the latest maritime accidents and incidents related to positioning based on reports from the IMCA database.

  • Operational documentation – a refresher on the principles of creating and working with key documents such as FMEA, Capability Plots, ASOG (Activity Specific Operating Guidelines), CAM, and TAM.

  • Planning and risk management – conducting advanced Risk Assessment for complex operations.

  • Emergency management (simulator) – practical scenarios involving thruster failures, position reference system (PRS) errors, loss of power (blackout), and operator errors.

What will you learn?

The course program combines theoretical knowledge updates with intensive practical training and includes, among others:

  • Updates in regulations and guidelines – discussion of the latest industry standards and recommendations issued by, among others, IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association), MTS (Marine Technology Society), and the IMO.

  • Incident analysis (Case Studies) – a detailed study of the latest accidents and incidents related to DP operations worldwide (DP Station Keeping Events), with particular emphasis on “lessons learned”.

  • Technology development – a review of new hardware, updates in position reference systems (PRS), and sensors.

  • Operation planning and documentation – a refresher on the principles of properly analyzing shipboard documentation (FMEA, Capability Plots) and creating and adhering to operational procedures (ASOG, TAM, CAM).

  • Responding in emergency situations – polishing safety procedures, alarm management, and making the right decisions in critical situations.

What does the training look like?

The training lasts 5 days and is divided into two equal parts – classroom lectures and intensive training on a full-mission simulator.

  • Theoretical classes – focus on documentation analysis, case studies of incidents from around the world, and open discussions between experienced officers exchanging practices from their ships.

  • Simulator training – under the supervision of an instructor, participants return to conducting complex operations. A key element of this part is the introduction of unexpected failures by the instructors (e.g., loss of power, PRS errors, thruster failures). Trainees must prove that they can properly diagnose problems, communicate with the team, and safely abort the operation.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
