The Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS) familiarization course was created for offshore sector workers traveling by helicopter to or from offshore installations, where CA-EBS is standard equipment in the event of an emergency landing. The aim of the training is not only to provide the necessary technical skills but also to consolidate awareness of the hazards associated with the use of CA-EBS and the proper response procedures in the event of an emergency.

Course program

The training focuses on the construction of the equipment, emergency procedures, and the physiology of breathing compressed air:

• Introduction and regulations – differences between older re-breather systems (EBS) and the modern compressed air system (CA-EBS). Legal requirements for offshore flights.
• Hazards – understanding the specific medical hazards associated with breathing compressed air underwater (e.g., the risk of pulmonary barotrauma when holding one’s breath during ascent).
• Equipment construction and inspection – familiarization with the system components (air cylinder, mouthpiece, hose, pressure indicator, lifejacket). Learning to conduct pre-flight checks.
• Evacuation procedures – techniques for the safe and rapid extraction of the mouthpiece, purging water, and commencing breathing underwater.

What will you learn?

By participating in this training, you will acquire the reflexes and skills necessary to survive a helicopter crash. You will learn to:

• Independently and correctly check if the CA-EBS equipment assigned to you is functional before boarding the helicopter.
• Properly don and adjust the lifejacket integrated with the CA-EBS.
• In a split second, even with closed eyes or in poor visibility, locate the mouthpiece, place it in your mouth, and clear it of water before taking the first breath (using the exhalation technique or the purge button).
• Safely breathe through the system during evacuation, remembering to continuously exhale while ascending to the sea surface.

What does the training look like?

The training is highly practical, although devoid of major physical strain. It includes: a short introduction in the lecture room on the mechanics of the equipment’s operation and hazards (physiology of breathing). Participants practice “dry” donning of the equipment, extracting the mouthpiece from its pouch, and techniques for its activation.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
