The Management level training in the Deck Department (Chief Mate) for those training via the course method is part of the maritime training system that prepares participants for promotion to the position of Chief Mate on merchant ships. The course enables the acquisition of the appropriate qualifications and skills necessary to perform a responsible role at sea – the Chief Mate is responsible for crew management, deck operations, and the full safety of the ship during their watch.

Course program:

• Navigation and maneuvering module – the scope covers advanced voyage planning (including weather routing and ice navigation), celestial navigation, analysis of meteorological phenomena, use of ECDIS and ARPA systems, and in-depth maneuvering theory. Exercises in this block largely take place on simulators and cover navigation in difficult conditions (shallow waters, canals, heavy weather), mooring maneuvers, and the coordination of Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.

• Marine carriage, construction, and stability module – the scope covers hull construction, maintaining reserve buoyancy, handling various cargoes (including IMDG and IMSBC dangerous goods), and supervision over cargo handling safety. Exercises are based on interpreting ship’s documentation, advanced stability calculations, creating stowage plans, and damage control calculations.

• Command, law, and safety module – the scope covers international maritime law regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW), the principles of the ISM Code, the functioning of marine power plants, as well as the psychology and sociology of team command. Exercises focus on Bridge Resource Management (BRM), effective communication (including in English), and leading people under stress and in extreme emergency situations.

What will you learn on the course?

• Conduct safe and optimized ocean navigation based on the analysis of meteorological data and modern navigational and radionavigational systems.

• Independently and precisely maneuver a large vessel in restricted waters, currents, winds, or in cooperation with tugs.

• Efficiently plan loading and discharging operations for any type of ship, strictly controlling its stability, reserve buoyancy, and hull stresses.

• Effectively manage the bridge team, appropriately delegate tasks, recognize signs of crew fatigue, and decisively lead fire-fighting and rescue operations.

• Practically apply and enforce international maritime law regulations, including procedures preventing marine environmental pollution.

What does the training look like?

The training is highly comprehensive, divided into theoretical lectures and a very extensive practical part. The teaching method combines theory with intensive calculation workshops, drafting documentation, and practical training.

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
