Course duration: 0,5 day
The GWO Fire Awareness (FAW) training aims to develop a fundamental awareness of fire hazards among technicians and service personnel. This is not a course to become a professional firefighter, but a rigorous preventive training. It teaches how to prevent a fire, how to properly assess the situation when smoke appears, and how to safely use portable fire-fighting equipment to extinguish a fire in its infancy and allow the crew to safely evacuate.
Requirements:
-
valid identity document (ID card/passport/mObywatel)
-
work clothing, work gloves, safety footwear
The course price includes:
-
WINDA system registration fee
-
coffee / tea
-
free parking
Additional fees:
-
none
Certificate validity:
-
2 years
Course program:
The training combines knowledge of the physical chemistry of combustion with rigorous emergency procedures:
-
Fire development and spread – understanding the “fire triangle” (heat, oxygen, fuel). How fires develop in the specific, ventilated, and confined environment of a wind turbine.
-
Fire Prevention – identifying the main sources of hazards on wind farms. Principles of safe work with electrical equipment and flammable liquids.
-
Situation assessment and emergency procedures – responding to the detection of smoke or fire. Planning evacuation routes and rules for alerting co-workers.
-
Fire-fighting equipment – discussing the types of portable fire-fighting equipment used in turbines (CO2, powder, water, and foam extinguishers, as well as fire blankets). When and which extinguisher to use, and when to categorically refrain from extinguishing.
Accreditations: Global Wind Organisation (GWO)
What will you learn?
By participating in this module, you will acquire practical knowledge and skills that allow you to:
-
Quickly and accurately recognize early signs of fire in a wind turbine environment (e.g., the smell of overheated electrical insulation).
-
Instantly assess the risk: make a critical decision whether a given fire can be extinguished with portable equipment, or whether an immediate evacuation to the outside of the turbine should be initiated.
-
Effectively and safely use a standard fire extinguisher and a fire blanket in confined spaces (e.g., in the event of an electrical panel or spilled oil fire).
-
Minimize the risk of a fire by applying good practices during routine maintenance work.
What does the training look like?
The training focuses on dynamics and overcoming the fear of open flames:
-
Theoretical part: short discussion panels and lectures raising awareness of the scale of the threat, supported by an analysis of real fire incidents on wind farms.
-
Practical training at the fire training ground: a key element of the course. In controlled, safe conditions, participants physically operate various types of fire extinguishers, suppressing real fire in arranged simulations (e.g., extinguishing a burning tray with a flammable liquid or a simulated installation).
Confirmation of course completion:
The assessment of participants is based on continuous monitoring of their engagement and the correctness of performing practical exercises by a certified GWO instructor. Upon successful completion of the module, the trainee obtains the GWO Fire Awareness certificate. The training result is immediately entered into the global WINDA system, which constitutes official proof of qualifications honored by employers in the wind industry worldwide. The qualifications remain valid for 2 years (later completion of a shorter refresher training – FAW Refresher – is required).
Where does the training take place, and is there parking?
Attendance confirmation takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided by the secretariat staff upon confirmation of the course.
The training takes place in Gdynia at 13 Wiśniewskiego Street – where there is also free parking.
