In today’s electronic navigation, holding a generic ECDIS certificate is only half the battle. According to Port State Control (PSC) guidelines and shipowner audits (e.g., in the rigorous SIRE system), a navigating officer cannot take over a watch if they do not prove proficient knowledge of the exact type of equipment and software installed on the bridge of their ship. Each manufacturer uses a different menu logic, distinct data display, and its own alarm procedures.

The ECDIS Transas / WÄRTSILÄ – Type Specific Training course is an intensive equipment training that allows for a smooth transition from general theory to practice. It is dedicated to officers who need authorized certification to operate one of the most popular and advanced systems in the world – WÄRTSILÄ ECDIS (Navi-Sailor 4000/5000), historically known more widely under the Transas brand.

• A valid identity document (ID card / passport / mObywatel app)
• Operational use of ECDIS certificate (Generic ECDIS certificate)

Course program:

The program focuses exclusively on the architecture and functionalities of the dedicated Transas / Wärtsilä software:

• Interface and basic operation – system menu structure, navigation screen management, configuration of quick access panels, and user profile management.
• Electronic charts and updates – loading new chart cells, installing licenses, and correctly carrying out data updates using the Navi-Planner module.
• Voyage planning – creating and modifying a route, defining safety corridors, complex ETA calculations, adding navigational notes.
• Monitoring and safety – setting and interpreting safety contours, overlaying radar data and AIS targets.
• Alarm management – configuration of system alarms and warnings, identification of sensor errors, and using emergency functions.

What will you learn?

By participating in this training, you will acquire hard hardware competencies that will allow you to:

• Completely independently, safely, and intuitively operate the Wärtsilä (Transas) Navi-Sailor system on the ship, without having to “search” for basic functions during the watch.
• Flawlessly administer charts, including carrying out correct weekly updates – which eliminates the risk of serious observations from PSC officers.
• Utilize the advanced capabilities of the Navi-Sailor system to create comprehensive voyage plans, strictly adapted to your ship’s parameters.
• Properly read the system’s specific alarm logic, preventing the ignoring of actual navigational threats.

What does the training look like?

The trainee works on their own console with the original Wärtsilä Navi-Sailor software installed and performs a series of pre-planned exercises under the instructor’s supervision – from loading chart licenses, through planning a route, to reacting to a sudden GPS signal failure during a simulated passage.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
