The Dangerous Goods (HAZMAT) Training prepares you for the safe execution of operations related to the transport and handling of dangerous goods in the maritime environment. Participants will learn the principles of classifying dangerous goods, their properties, as well as the requirements regarding marking, documentation, and basic stowage principles. The course is intended for personnel responsible for cargo operations on ships carrying dangerous goods.

Course program:

  • Classification and general stowage principles – the scope covers the principles of classifying dangerous goods, the correct technical name and proper shipping name (PSN), primary and subsidiary hazard classes, principles of classifying goods as marine pollutants, UN numbers, packing groups, hazard labels, and general stowage principles.

  • Properties of dangerous goods (classes 1–9 and MHB) – includes detailed specifications and conditions for the carriage of, among others, explosives (Class 1), gases in various forms (Class 2), flammable liquids (Class 3), flammable solids and self-reactive substances (Class 4), oxidizing substances and organic peroxides (Class 5), toxic and infectious substances (Class 6), radioactive materials (Class 7), corrosive substances (Class 8), miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles (Class 9), and materials hazardous only in bulk (MHB).

The course program complies with:

  • The STCW 78 Convention, as amended

  • Chapter 1.3 of the IMDG Code and Sections B-V/b and B-V/c of the STCW Code

  • IMO Model Course 1.10

What will you learn on the course?

  • Safely identify and correctly classify dangerous goods based on their physical and chemical properties, UN numbers, and hazard labels.

  • Apply rigorous stowage and segregation principles for individual classes of goods (from explosives to chemicals and gases).

  • Take appropriate precautions and safety procedures during cargo operations involving dangerous and harmful substances.

  • Recognize health hazards arising directly from contact with dangerous cargo.

  • Correctly respond and provide medical first aid in emergency situations related to exposure to dangerous substances.

What does the training look like?

The teaching method includes lectures on international regulations and cargo classification, as well as practical exercises based on the syllabus of IMO Model Course 1.10. Course completion is based on knowledge verification through a test covering the lecture part and a demonstration of acquired skills for the practical part.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
