Course duration: 5 days

The Dynamic Positioning Sea Time Reduction (STR) Course is an intensive, specialized training program designed for individuals aiming to obtain their full DP Operator (DPO) certificate faster. The main advantage of this training is the possibility of reducing the required DP sea time. According to the official guidelines of The Nautical Institute, the successful completion of the 5-day simulator course is recognized as the equivalent of 30 days of DP sea time.

Requirements:

  • A valid passport

  • A Seaman’s Book

  • An OOW (Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch) Certificate of Competency (minimum requirement)

  • Completed Advanced Dynamic Positioning Course (DP Positioning Operator Simulator Course)

  • DP Logbook

Course program

The training is highly practical (based on operational scenarios) and includes, among others:

  • Advanced operational planning – independently creating detailed plans for specific offshore operations, precise Risk Assessment, and the analysis of Capability Plots and FMEA documents.

  • Practical execution of simulations – safely bringing the vessel to the working position and executing complex operations (e.g., platform supply, diving support, ROV support) in realistic conditions and using various Position Reference Systems (PRS).

  • Responding to emergency situations and system errors – problem-solving under high-stress conditions (including thruster failures, loss of power/blackout, loss of data from reference systems, sensor errors).

  • Management & Procedures – implementing and enforcing ASOG (Activity Specific Operating Guidelines), correctly documenting operations in the system, professional communication, and proper DP Handover procedures.

What will you learn?

The STR course program is strictly defined by The Nautical Institute syllabus and focuses on operations management and emergency situations. The skills you will acquire (or improve) include:

  • Operational proficiency – smoothly transitioning the ship from the navigation phase to full, safe dynamic positioning at the worksite.

  • Operations management and procedures – maintaining and implementing ASOG (Activity Specific Operating Guidelines), proper watch handover, and effective communication on the bridge.

  • Documentation and risk analysis – interpreting key documents, including FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), assessing Capability Plots, and conducting a comprehensive Risk Assessment before starting work.

  • Problem solving – recognizing the limitations of Position Reference Systems (PRS) and sensor errors, and implementing appropriate corrective actions.

  • Crisis management – safely leaving the worksite (via Escape Routes) in the event of critical failures (e.g., loss of power, thruster failures).

What does the training look like?

  • The STR training is highly intensive and relies almost entirely on practical exercises. Participants spend most of their time on an advanced (Full Mission) simulator, where they encounter realistic, complex operational scenarios. Instructors systematically introduce various types of faults and hardware failures, forcing trainees to work under pressure, analyze alarms, and make quick, correct decisions to ensure safety. Unlike traditional courses, participants are continuously assessed during each simulator task. The instructor verifies the candidate’s ability to independently and safely perform the role of a DPO.
  • Course completion is based on the verification of the participant’s knowledge in the form of an official Nautical Institute (NI) online exam. To successfully complete the course and receive a certificate of completion, a minimum score of 70% must be achieved on the test.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
