The Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) course prepares you to act as the person responsible for the safe reception and handling of helicopter landings on offshore installations. The HLO acts as the “eyes on the ground” for the pilot and is responsible for the entire landing operation, coordinating the activities of the support personnel, and maintaining the helideck’s readiness – both during normal operations and in emergency situations.

Course program:

• Regulations and procedures – knowledge of international regulations regarding offshore helidecks (including CAP 437 guidelines) and the roles and responsibilities of the HLO.

• Helideck management – preparing the helideck, rescue and firefighting equipment before the helicopter’s arrival.

• Communication – radio communication procedures between the ship/platform and the helicopter crew, reporting weather conditions (wind, ship’s motion).

• Passenger and cargo operations – safe transfer of personnel (including passenger safety briefings), supervision of equipment loading, helicopter offshore refueling procedures.

• Emergency situations – organizing a rescue operation, managing the team in the event of a fire, crash landing, or the need to evacuate casualties.

What will you learn?

By participating in the HLO training, you will gain the knowledge and skills that will allow you to:

• Properly assess the technical readiness and safety of the helideck before each aircraft arrival.

• Conduct professional and clear radio communication with the pilots.

• Efficiently command the Helideck Assistant (HDA) team during standard operations and in high-stress situations.

• Effectively coordinate the use of shipboard firefighting and rescue equipment in the event of a helicopter accident.

• Supervise the safe movement of passengers in the high-risk zone (with running rotors).

What does the training look like?

The training is theoretical in nature. Classes take place in a lecture room and cover regulations, radio communication principles, analysis of aviation accidents at sea, and emergency planning.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
