Course program

The program is condensed (practice-oriented) and focuses on consolidating key procedures:

  • Knowledge update – review of potential amendments to regulations, legal standards, and GWO standards regarding working at heights.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – re-verification and donning of basic protective equipment – full body harnesses, helmets, and shock-absorbing lanyards. Pre-use inspection.

  • Positioning and safety systems – exercises on optimally stabilizing the working position and correctly using fall arrest systems while working on a tower ladder.

  • Evacuation – reminder of the principles of using personal or turbine evacuation systems (descent devices) in emergency situations, e.g., during a fire.

  • Rescue operation management – advanced rescue module, including safely lowering an unconscious or injured co-worker from a height.

What will you learn and remember?

By participating in this one-day module, you will eliminate bad habits and confirm your full readiness to:

  • Correctly and instinctively use fall protection equipment (PPE) with 100% certainty regarding its functionality and integrity.

  • Effectively and highly safely secure your own position at heights in difficult, spatially restricted conditions.

  • Independently plan and instantly execute an evacuation descent from the turbine to the outside of the tower in the event of a sudden emergency.

  • Efficiently release an injured colleague from a fall arrest system and lower them to the nearest platform.

What does the training look like?

The training focuses on the trainee’s continuous physical activity and situational realism:

  • Exchange of experiences: short introductions based on discussion, analysis of current solutions, and trainees’ experiences from the last 2 years of working on wind farms.

  • Simulations at the training facility: the majority of the classes are a workshop during which participants perform practical tasks in work clothing on training ground infrastructure resembling a turbine environment. They perform several climbs, evacuation descents, and rescue maneuvers.

Confirmation of course completion

Skills assessment is carried out continuously by certified GWO instructors. They continuously verify the correctness of individual actions and knowledge of safety and rescue procedures. Successful completion results in the immediate issuance of a renewed GWO Working at Heights Refresher certificate. The qualifications are also entered into the international WINDA database, which extends your right to work in the wind sector for another 24 months.
