The GWO Onshore Limited Access training was developed as a condensed, dedicated module aimed at individuals who, due to their profession, do not perform physical technical or maintenance work. It is primarily intended for management staff (managers), inspectors, auditors, administrative personnel, and technical guests/investors. The course allows participants to safely, legally, and consciously enter the premises of an onshore wind farm and move around it while assisted by qualified technicians.

Course program

The training program is short, accessible, and focuses on the elementary principles of being inside a turbine:

• Hazard awareness – recognition and identification of characteristic hazards occurring during visits to an onshore wind farm (e.g., moving mechanical parts, live electrical installations).

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – discussion, proper fitting, and use of basic safety equipment (i.e., full body harnesses, safety helmets, shock-absorbing lanyards).

• Principles of safe access – properly entering the turbine and moving around platforms and in confined spaces. Exercises in safe ladder climbing using vertical fall arrest systems.

• Responding to emergency situations – principles of behavior in the event of sudden failures, hearing an evacuation alarm, or a fire breaking out while inside the turbine.

What will you learn?

By participating in this module, you will acquire competencies that allow you to:

• Independently and flawlessly don and fit a work harness before starting a visit.

• Completely safely attach yourself to fall arrest systems inside the tower, eliminating the risk of a dangerous fall from a height.

• Identify high-risk zones (e.g., around the gearbox) and maintain a safe distance.

• Behave calmly, composedly, and in accordance with procedures in the event a turbine evacuation is ordered.

What does the training look like?

The training is based on an accessible theoretical introduction and elementary physical activities:

• Accessible theory: Lectures utilizing discussions aimed at familiarizing individuals without a technical background with the specifics of onshore turbine operation.

• Short practice at the training facility: Participants, dressed in required work clothing and harnesses, will practice climbing a ladder, attaching the fall arrester, and moving across platforms under controlled conditions, which ensures the development of basic safe habits.

Confirmation of course completion

Passing is based on continuous assessment of the trainee’s engagement during the discussion of theory and the performance of simple practical exercises. Upon completing the training, the participant receives the GWO Onshore Limited Access certificate, which is automatically entered into the WINDA database. These qualifications constitute an international “passport” for legally and safely visiting onshore wind turbines.

Where does the training take place, and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided by the secretariat staff upon confirmation of the course.
