The Advanced Dynamic Positioning (DP) Course is a training program for maritime industry professionals working on vessels with dynamic positioning (DP). It is a specialized training that prepares participants for complex tasks related to the control and management of the position of a ship or platform at sea, including oil drilling rigs or research vessels.

• A Seaman’s Book

• An OOW (Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch) Certificate of Competency (minimum requirement)

• Completed Basic Dynamic Positioning Course (DP Induction Course)

• DP Logbook

Course program:

The training is primarily practical (simulator-based) and, in accordance with NI (Nautical Institute) guidelines, includes:

• Practical operation of the DP system – configuring the system for specific tasks, assessing and analyzing Capability Plots, and operating Position Reference Systems (PRS).

• Operation planning – creating plans for intended DP operations, Risk Assessment, Hazard Identification, and developing contingency plans.

• DP operation simulations – executing various operational scenarios in a safe simulated environment, including platform supply, ROV support, diving support, or cable laying operations.

• Emergency management – learning the proper response to system errors, failures, and faults, as well as interpreting and handling alarms, warnings, and system printouts.

• Cooperation and procedures – maintaining and implementing ASOG (Activity Specific Operating Guidelines), communication, proper watch handover, and practicing effective teamwork on the bridge under standard conditions and under pressure.

What will you learn on the course?

Participants of the program deepen their knowledge and improve their skills in:

• Practical operation of DP control systems and reference systems on an advanced simulator.

• Analyzing and interpreting ship’s operational documentation (including Capability Plots, FMEA).

• Planning safe DP operations, risk assessment, and preparing guidelines (ASOG).

• Recognizing and correctly responding to alarms, technical system errors, and emergency situations.

• Effective communication, bridge resource management, and cooperation with the crew during complex DP maneuvers.

What does the training look like?

The training lasts 4 days and balances technical and operational knowledge. The teaching method includes lectures on international standards based directly on The Nautical Institute program, combined with practical testing of equipment operation and the simulation of emergency procedures on DP control panels. Course completion is based on the verification of the participant’s knowledge in the form of an official Nautical Institute (NI) online exam. To successfully complete the course and receive a certificate of completion, a minimum score of 70% must be achieved on the test.

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
