Course program:

  • Emergency procedures and optimization of resources – the scope covers the analysis of the general design and layout of the ship, emergency procedures, and optimizing the use of limited life-saving resources and available crew members. This module is based on lectures combined with 1 hour of practical exercises in situational assessment, drawing on lessons learned from previous passenger ship accidents.

  • Psychology of command and stress in crisis situations – the scope includes principles of a leader’s behavior, techniques for motivating and calming passengers, as well as recognizing the symptoms of excessive stress in oneself and the rescue team. The impact of stress on performance and the ability to follow instructions is analyzed.

  • Control of human behavior and communication – the scope covers the analysis of passenger behavior patterns (panic, searching for loved ones, irrational actions, fleeing to cabins) and techniques for establishing effective verbal and non-verbal communication (e.g., giving hand signals). The issue of language barriers is also discussed.

The course program complies with:

  • The STCW 78 Convention, as amended

  • Section A-V/2 of the STCW Code (paragraph 4) and Table A-V/2-2

  • IMO Model Course 1.29

What will you learn on the course?

  • Effectively lead and direct passengers and subordinate crew in sudden maritime emergency situations.

  • Properly apply shipboard emergency procedures and optimize the use of available life-saving equipment and human resources.

  • Control your own reactions to excessive stress, and recognize and mitigate symptoms of panic in other team members.

  • Manage passenger behavior by anticipating their typical, often irrational reactions (e.g., returning to cabins) in the face of a crisis.

  • Maintain effective communication by issuing clear instructions, including the use of non-verbal methods in a multilingual environment.

What does the training look like?

The teaching method includes lectures on crowd psychology and procedures, combined with communication and emergency situational assessment exercises, based on the guidelines of IMO Model Course 1.29. Course completion is based on knowledge verification in the form of a test (lecture part) and a demonstration of practical skills during the exercises.
