The Chief Engineer on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000 kW propulsion power or more training is the absolute pinnacle of the educational path for engine department officers. The Chief Engineer is the most important person on the ship (alongside the Master), bearing ultimate legal and technical responsibility for the efficiency of the entire engine room, maintenance of safety systems, environmental protection, and the safety of their subordinate crew.

This elite qualification course does not teach the basics of engine construction. Its goal is to shape top-class leaders and engineer-managers, ready to take command on the largest and most powerful seagoing vessels sailing the oceans. The program focuses on maintenance strategy, in-depth analysis of the profitability of ship operations, complex legal conditions, and dealing with extreme crisis situations on a global scale.

Course program

The training program is extremely advanced and prepares you for full management of the technical aspect of shipping:

• Strategic management of the marine power plant – combustion process optimization (Performance Tuning), diagnostics of the latest types of main propulsion (including low-emission drives and dual-fuel systems) and advanced auxiliary installations.

• Ship economics and budget management – planning strategic dry-docking repairs, negotiations, managing service contracts, optimizing the costs of bunkering and spare parts.

• Maritime law and state inspections – detailed interpretation and enforcement of MARPOL (prevention of pollution from ships), SOLAS, and MLC regulations. Preparing the ship and representing it during classification society audits, Port State Control (PSC), and Flag State inspections.

• Risk and safety management – implementation and auditing of the ISM Code, defense planning against threats (ISPS), and cybersecurity in ship automation systems.

• Leadership and Teamwork – motivating an international crew, assessing subordinates’ competencies, coping in high-stress situations.

• Emergency ship theory and stability – major hull damage, responding to flooding, analysis and calculation of damage stability from the perspective of maintaining propulsion and continuity of the ship’s power supply.

What does the training look like?

The training program is focused on exam preparation as well as organizing and consolidating knowledge – it is a long and demanding qualification course.

• Expert lectures – conducted by experienced Chief Engineers, maritime auditors, shipowners’ technical superintendents, and surveyors. The emphasis is on sharing experience from real maritime disasters and incidents, as well as legal changes worldwide.

• Analytical workshops – participants analyze technical documentation, study accident cases, and solve financial management problems that they will have to face in the Chief Engineer’s office.
