The Radar and ARPA training at the management level is a five-day training for individuals who want to deepen their skills in using radar and the ARPA system while navigating a ship. During the course, participants acquire theoretical knowledge and practical experience in radar navigation, assessing vessel traffic (ARPA), route planning, and identifying and responding to navigational hazards.

Course program:

• Introduction and plotting systems – the scope covers familiarization with the navigational bridge, operation of ARPA and navigational equipment on the simulator, as well as the analysis of factors affecting the accuracy of radar plotting. Exercises (both classic and simulator-based) involve plotting, creating radar reports, and planning anti-collision maneuvers.
• Navigation and collision avoidance (ARPA) – the scope covers the application of COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea) in open waters under conditions of restricted visibility, navigating in restricted waters, fairways, and in or near Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS). This most extensive module is carried out mainly through intensive simulator classes, focusing on commanding a navigational watch.
• Planning and coordination of SAR operations – the scope covers receiving distress messages via VHF radio, as well as the strategic planning and coordination of search and rescue operations. This knowledge is verified and trained during dedicated simulator exercises of SAR operations.

• Sections A-II/2 and A-I/12 of the STCW Code (Table A-II/2)
• IMO Model Course 1.08

What will you learn on the course?

• Flawlessly assess system errors and fully understand the technical aspects of the operation of modern navigational systems (including radar and ARPA systems).
• Command and conduct completely safe navigation in difficult conditions of zero or significantly restricted visibility.
• Critically evaluate navigational information obtained from all available sources on the bridge, including advanced ARPA, AIS, and ECDIS systems.
• Quickly and accurately issue maneuvering orders to avoid collisions and direct safe navigation in various types of sea areas.
• Optimally process and use the full spectrum of navigational data to coordinate maritime search and rescue (SAR) operations.

What does the training look like?

The training is highly advanced and lasts a total of 40 clock hours. The program is divided into 10 hours of theoretical lectures and as many as 30 hours of practical classes – intensive decision-making training on an advanced simulator. The teaching method is based on the guidelines of the IMO Model Course 1.08 and focuses on simulating real conditions of commanding a navigational bridge.

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
