The Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) course is designed for professionals working on ships and sailing vessels, as well as sailors wishing to expand their knowledge of maritime safety and serve in officer roles. During the training, you will learn effective communication in emergency situations, proper response to alarms and evacuation procedures, and compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) rules while maintaining good relations among the crew.

This training is part of the Basic Safety Training (4 STCW) course, which includes three other basic training modules: Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, and Elementary First Aid.

Course program:

  • Introduction and legal regulations – international conventions (including STCW, SOLAS, MARPOL, ILO, IMDG Code) and discussion of basic ship documents.

  • Hazards and emergency procedures – recognizing types of hazards (fire, collision, piracy, terrorism, dangerous goods), knowledge of shipboard emergency plans, alarm signals, and escape routes. Exercises in this module include responding to emergency situations, issuing commands, and complying with them in practice.

  • OHS and marine environment protection – preventing spills at sea, handling procedures before entering enclosed spaces, occupational safety on board, and knowledge of ILO regulations.

  • Social responsibilities and human relations – recognizing personality types, cultural and religious differences, employment principles, stress management, and examining the impact of fatigue, alcohol, and drugs on the crew’s work. Exercises in this module teach effective communication and breaking down communication barriers on the ship.

The course program complies with:

  • The STCW 78 Convention, as amended

  • Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code and Table A-VI/1-4

  • IMO Model Course 1.21

What will you learn on the course?

  • Recognize and minimize the risk of various types of hazards on the ship, including those related to collisions, dangerous goods, piracy, and terrorism.

  • Correctly interpret shipboard emergency plans and evacuation signals, and properly perform duties assigned in the muster lists.

  • Apply daily OHS procedures and personal protective equipment, especially when entering so-called enclosed spaces.

  • Prevent marine environmental pollution (e.g., prevent spills after running aground or during cargo transfer) in accordance with the MARPOL convention.

  • Communicate effectively with the crew in English, overcome interpersonal barriers, mitigate stressful situations, and cope with fatigue while on watch.

What does the training look like?

The training lasts 3 days, consisting of 18 hours of theoretical lectures and 2.5 hours of dedicated practical exercises. The teaching methods include lectures on maritime procedures and legislation, as well as exercises in effective communication and responding to issued commands. Course completion is based on knowledge verification through a test covering the lecture material and a demonstration of acquired skills for the practical part.

Where does the training take place?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
