The Medical Care Training is a specialized training designed for persons designated to take charge of medical care on board ship. The course program covers advanced issues in the field of maritime medicine, including diagnostics, treatment, and managing crisis situations on board. Training participants will learn how to provide effective medical care to the sick in marine conditions, taking into account the specifics of working at sea.

  • A valid Medical First Aid certificate

Course program:

  • Introduction, anatomy, and casualty assessment – the scope covers the legal basis for providing assistance, the basics of human anatomy and physiology crucial for saving lives, and the principles of casualty examination. During the exercises, you will learn to safely place casualties in appropriate rescue positions.
  • Resuscitation and medical emergencies (unconsciousness, bleeding, shock) – the scope covers methods for recognizing cardiac arrest, unconsciousness, and diagnosing and managing traumatic shock. This is a module heavily focused on practical exercises, during which you will practice resuscitation procedures, bleeding control, and techniques for securing patients in shock.
  • Burns, injuries, and transport – the scope covers the classification and procedures for handling burns (thermal, chemical, electrical) and charring, as well as the identification of fractures, muscle injuries, dislocations, and sprains. The module ends with exercises in preparing a casualty for transport and the physical immobilization of injuries (including spinal injuries).

  • Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code and Table A-VI/4-2
  • IMO Model Course 1.15

What will you learn on the course?

  • Recognize cardiac arrest and safely perform full cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an adult patient.
  • Properly secure an unconscious casualty by placing them correctly in the recovery position.
  • Effectively control bleeding and recognize and stabilize fractures using immobilization methods.
  • Secure a casualty experiencing traumatic shock.
  • Provide first aid for burns and expertly prepare patients (e.g., with spinal injuries) for medical transport.

What does the training look like?

The teaching method is optimized for practice, based on the guidelines of the IMO Model Course 1.13 and combines the transfer of medical knowledge with intensive manual training.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
