The Nautical Ship Command training (Bridge Team Management + Bridge Resource Management) is a specialized training course designed for navigating officers and ship masters, aimed at developing bridge management skills and effective cooperation within a navigational team. The course program is designed in accordance with international standards and regulations, ensuring that participants acquire the knowledge and competencies necessary for safe and effective navigation management on the bridge.

Course program:

• Principles of team management – the scope includes workload analysis, methods of effective management, assessment and evaluation, decision-making methods in emergency situations, and the impact of the human element on errors.

• Psychology and sociology of command – utilizing crew members’ aptitudes, coping with cultural differences, building authority and assertiveness on board, as well as techniques for motivating, defining goals, and controlling panic under stress.

• Commanding a navigational watch – organizational structures on the ship, ergonomic and legal issues concerning the deck department’s work, as well as mandatory training and briefings for the crew after embarkation and during operation.

• Maneuvering simulator (practical classes) – the scope covers voyage planning and execution in normal and emergency conditions, as well as anchoring, mooring, and responding to the effects of wind, current, shallow water, bank effect, and canal effect. Exercises in this module are based on the specifics of bridge command in a simulated environment.

The course program complies with:

• The STCW 78 Convention, as amended

• Sections A-II/1, A-II/2, and A-VIII/2 of the STCW Code

• IMO Model Courses: 1.22 and 1.39

What will you learn on the course?

• Effectively manage and train the deck crew, and assign tasks taking into account competencies and workload.

• Apply in practice techniques for making difficult decisions in high-risk and stressful situations.

• Plan a voyage, maintain a safe navigational watch, and operate the ship considering external influences (e.g., wind, currents, shallow water effects).

• Communicate effectively and assertively with the team, mitigating conflicts and misunderstandings resulting from, among other things, cultural differences.

• Maintain authority and control your own emotions as well as those of the crew, especially during panic or an unexpected emergency situation.

What does the training look like?

The training lasts 4 days and is divided into theoretical lectures on psychology and regulations, and practical classes in a maneuvering simulator. The teaching method includes knowledge imparted in classrooms, combined with the analysis of realistic maritime scenarios, which allow the practical application of acquired knowledge and skills. These simulations may include emergency situations, complex maneuvers, and cooperation with other vessels.

Where does the training take place?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
