The Master on ships of 3,000 gross tonnage or more is an intensive training program designed for experienced seafarers who wish to advance to the highest positions on board large merchant ships. Participants of this course will be thoroughly prepared to act as Master, which entails immense responsibility for the ship, crew, and the safety of navigation in international waters. The training focuses on developing advanced skills in navigation, crew management, maritime law, safety, and rescue procedures.

Course program

The training program is extremely comprehensive and covers the full spectrum of knowledge required of a ship’s commander:

• Maritime Law and Insurance – advanced interpretation of international conventions (UNCLOS, SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, MLC), P&I insurance, charter parties, sea protests, and legal procedures in foreign ports.

• Safety Management (ISM/ISPS) – audits and supervision over the functioning of safety management systems, organizing and controlling the ship’s defense against terrorism and piracy.

• Leadership and Teamwork – human resource management on board, conflict resolution, and assessment of the crew’s performance at the highest command level.

• Shiphandling – theory and advanced simulations of maneuvering large vessels in difficult hydrometeorological conditions, in shallow waters and canals, towing operations, and emergency anchoring.

• Rescue and Crisis Situations – coordination of search and rescue operations (SAR / IAMSAR), command during fires, groundings, collisions, and in the event of a pollution threat (SOPEP).

• Cargo Management – advanced knowledge of ship stability and strength (Damage Stability) and management of hazardous materials handling operations.

• Make binding legal and operational decisions on behalf of the shipowner in crisis situations.

• Direct complex, multi-threaded rescue operations on the high seas.

• Safely and independently maneuver the largest types of merchant ships without assistance, as well as with tug assistance in difficult conditions.

• Solve complex issues in the field of damage stability and hull stresses.

• Effectively communicate with state administration authorities (Port State Control, classification societies) and represent the ship during audits.

What does the training look like?

The qualification course is a very demanding process, consisting of theoretical classes and intensive practical exercises:

• Expert lectures: conducted by the qualified teaching staff of the Maritime School – experienced Master Mariners, PSC officers, maritime lawyers, and industry experts. The classes involve an in-depth analysis of maritime regulations.

• Simulator training: a key element of the course is classes on a full-mission navigation simulator. Participants take on the role of Master and practice dealing with advanced maneuvering situations and system failures requiring a quick, confident response and accurate management decisions.
