The Management level training in the Engine Department in International Shipping (Second Engineer) is a training program that prepares participants to take up the position of Second Engineer on merchant ships. It is a course conducted via the course method, which means participants learn in the form of regular training classes conducted by qualified instructors.

Course program

The program is extremely comprehensive and covers the full range of managerial and technical knowledge from the engine department:

• Operation of marine power plants – advanced theory of heat engines, fuel consumption optimization, Performance Monitoring of main engines and power generators.

• Safety management and maritime law – international conventions (MARPOL, SOLAS, STCW, MLC), ISM/ISPS procedures, insurance, preparation of the ship for inspections (Port State Control, classification society audits).

• Command in the engine department (ERM) – Engine Room Resource Management, conflict resolution, watch organization, and work planning.

• Maintenance and repair – planning technical budgets, planned maintenance systems, ordering and managing spare parts, organizing shipyard stays.

• Electrotechnology, electronics, and automation – diagnosing High Voltage systems, advanced control and measurement automation, and designing redundancy systems.

• Ship construction and stability – advanced theory of hull construction, damage stability of the ship from the perspective of the engine department.

What does the training look like?

The training is an intensive qualification course, lasting several weeks, requiring full commitment from the participants:

• Expert lectures – conducted by top-class specialists – practicing Chief Engineers, PSC officers, and maritime experts. Classes are based on the analysis of real cases and the exchange of experience from the sea.

• Simulator classes – participants take part in advanced exercises on the engine room simulator, training crisis management and making difficult decisions under time pressure.

Where does the training take place and is there parking?

The training takes place in Gdynia at 13A Polska Street. Free parking is located at 6 Chrzanowskiego Street. The barrier code is provided when the course is confirmed by the secretariat staff.
