The Safety&Quality Management System Internal Auditor course is specialized training for individuals who will be responsible for verifying and improving work standards on ships and in shipowners’ offices. In the maritime industry, Safety Management Systems (SMS) based on the ISM Code and quality and environmental management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001) are the foundation of daily operations.

Course program:

The training comprehensively prepares you for the role of an auditor, discussing the entire life cycle of an audit:

• Basics of management systems – discussion of the structure and requirements of the ISM Code and key ISO standards (Quality, Environment, OHS). The role of the Designated Person Ashore (DPA).
• Auditing principles (according to ISO 19011) – independence, objectivity, and an evidence-based approach.
• Planning and preparation – creating an audit plan, reviewing ship documentation, and developing checklists tailored to a specific type of ship.
• Audit techniques – collecting objective evidence through document review, observing work, and – most importantly – effectively interviewing crew members.
• Reporting and non-conformities – classification of audit findings. Formulating clear and indisputable Non-Conformity (NC) Reports.
• Post-audit activities – verifying the effectiveness of corrective actions proposed by the ship and closing the audit.

What will you learn?

By participating in this training, you will acquire the hard and soft competencies necessary for the work of an auditor:

• You will be able to independently plan, prepare, and conduct a comprehensive internal audit on a ship or in the shipowner’s shore-based department.
• You will develop interpersonal skills (asking open-ended questions, active listening) that will allow you to break the auditee’s stress barrier and reach the actual operational facts.
• You will gain confidence in correctly categorizing the problems found, which will protect the shipowner from unjustified costs or, conversely, from ignoring a critical risk.
• You will learn to write clear reports that will provide real added value for the company’s top management.

What does the training look like?

It includes an introduction to regulatory complexities and ISO methodology conducted by experienced, active lead auditors. Participants work on real SMS documentation.
